Act According to Your New Nature

Sermon Series

Passage: Colossians 3:1-17 — Tonight, the focus is on something we all want: which is to get rid of sin, those habits, thoughts, patterns we know are destructive to ourselves and others, and to acquire virtue, those character traits we all desire like compassion, humility, love. This passage shows us the only way to become truly virtuous. But it’s surprising to hear. It starts with our identity – with who we are. verse 3 says, “For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.” If you are a Christian, there’s an old you, and a new you. You’re no longer the person you used to be. You’ve died to the old way of living, and you are now a new creation. The main idea in our passage is this: act according to your new nature. It’s surprising! It’s not “go be a better person.” Or do better. It’s “be the new creation you are.” Act according to your new nature. That’s the big idea tonight. God provides a very practical process for us, so we know how to do it. First, set your mind on things above. Second, put sin to death. And third, clothe yourself with virtue.
