Colossians: All I Need is Christ

Our passage tonight highlights two major categories of religious belief systems that tend only to divide people. They create an in group and an out group. They become a tool that people use to separate, disagree, pass judgment, even oppress others. The book of Colossians is a Holy Spirit inspired letter written by the apostle Paul to a church in Colossae. He says to them "don't let anyone judge you for not adhering to these rituals". Religion does that. It judges. He says "don't let anyone disqualify you" for not being as self-disciplined, or for not having the same spiritual experiences. Religion does that. It disqualifies. The antidote? Christ. That's the big idea tonight: Christ is better than religion. He's the only one who can rescue us from the divisive reality of religion. Put your focus on religion, and you'll lose Christ. Put your focus on Christ, and you'll have everything. Our passage highlights two major categories of religion that are severely inferior to Christ. It's this: He's better than moralism. He's better than self-indulgence.
