Tonight, we're starting with humility and its insidious counterpart: pride. Proverbs is crystal clear. If you want life to go well for you, reject pride, learn to be humble. See yourself in accord with reality. Proverbs 3:34 sums it up way: Toward the scorners he is scornful, but to the humble he gives favor. The authors of the New Testament summarize it this way, which is our big idea for this evening: God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble. The Proverbs we read go on to break that down into two broad observations about the way God's world works: First, pride brings disgrace. Second, humility brings honor.
