We're obsessed with self-control, but despite the preponderance of techniques and tools, workouts and diet plans, morning rituals, calendars, reminders, life coaches and counselors, our lives are increasingly out of control. We're obsessed with it, but something's missing. That's why we come to God. He has more for us than the world could ever offer. We need more than technique to act self-controlled. Ironically, we find in Proverbs that we can begin to rule ourselves well only when we submit to God's rule. That a lack of self-control isn't just the failure of our rational will, but folly, the rejecting of God's wisdom. True self-control is not just mastery over our desires but submission of our desires to the will of God. It's faithfulness to God and dependence on him. Therefore the big idea tonight is 'Seek the virtue of self-control'. We'll look at three reasons why: The blessing will surpass the cost, the alternative will mess up your world, and the process will reveal true joy.
