Seven Marks of a Hypocrite

Passage: Luke 11:37-54 — In today's passage, we see Jesus rebuke the Pharisees for their hypocrisy. His tone may sound harsh, but He is recognizing the clear and urgent danger of their sin and speaking the truth about it plainly. Hypocrisy is like cancer for our faith, and like cancer it is often undetected at first. We start believing we are justified by our own works, then we prioritize external appearances of the faith over inner transformation, and finally we start desiring man’s approval over God’s. It becomes deadly to our soul. Jesus is gentle and patient with some sins, but not this one. Let’s not be patient with it in ourselves either. We’ll look at each of his specific rebukes and see Seven Marks of a Hypocrite. The goal is for us to know the symptoms of this cancer, so we can repent of our own hypocrisy and come again to know the heart of Christ, the one who was the opposite of a hypocrite.
