Thank God for what the gospel is doing

Sermon Series

Colossians: All I Need is Christ series artwork

Thanksgiving is powerful. Thanksgiving is personality forming. We become what we praise, and we become what is praised IN us. Praise is identity forming. Paul begins his letter to the Colossians with character-forming thankfulness. He doesn't just thank God, he lets the Colossian Christians know what he thanks God for. It gives us fuel to power our praise. Paul says he's thankful for what God is doing in the church through his gospel – through the good news of his Son Jesus. The gospel is doing what it does. It grows. It bears fruit. It increases. Paul's thankful to God because he sees all the signs that the gospel is thriving in this church - faith in Christ, love for the saints, and an unshakable hope. Faith, love, and hope – huge themes for Paul if you've read some of his other letters. Tonight the idea is to follow Paul's lead. Our big idea: thank God for what the gospel is doing. Specifically, thank him for faith and thank him for love.
